Proposal

  1. My program of study is Cinema and Communications
  2. a) I might open my text by saying that I watched a documentary on seal-hunting, and I was discouraged to see that the Inuit’s side of the story was hidden under the animal activists’ campaigns.

b) What are the elements hidden behind awareness campaigns?

c) I would like to challenge the common belief that awareness campaigns always have a positive impact on people.

     3.    I want to write about this topic because I realized that, in some cases, the way in which an issue is being presented on screens such as on social media and television is shaped to direct the viewers’ perspective in a single direction. Many things that we are exposed to are constructed to perceive a situation on the surface level while omitting to show the deeper truths which could completely change one’s opinion.

    4.  While doing research for this project, I would hope to learn more about other perspectives of the people concerned by the subject of a campaign.

    5. The general public’s opinion is sometimes commanded instead of guided.

    6. I think that my feature story could be considered an “investigation” because I will be searching for the deeper truths behind certain awareness campaigns.

   7. My intended audience would be teenagers and young adults who are exposed to mass information on screens and/or to social media activism.

   8. I hope to provoke curiousness in my audience. I would like them to be more conscious of what is being projected to us and become interested in knowing more about how awareness campaigns affect the opinion of viewers.

  9.  My article could appear on Teen Ink (13-19), this site accepts nonfiction writing https://www.teenink.com

10.  I am not sure if the term “awareness campaign” is the right one to globalize what I want to address in my feature story. I would like to talk specifically about the campaigns regarding seal-hunting and “Let’s Talk” by Bell, but I would also like to discuss activists’ posts on social media. My main idea is to get an understanding of the deeper truths of what we are exposed to daily; what is beyond the surface. I feel like we do not always question what is truly being supported by sharing an environmentalist’ post or an anti-animal cruelty picture. In my opinion, the viewers are often drawn to provoking images that create strong emotional responses. Driven by emotions, we do not always acknowledge that there is more to the story than what is being presented. In short, my feature story will be about the problematic elements of activist’s messages in media. I will choose specific examples to illustrate my point and refer to others’ opinions on the topic. Ideally, I would like to interview my younger sister and some of my friends because they are constantly exposed to mass information which makes them my targeted audience.
